I was dining at an Olive Garden when a hostess made a rude comment about someone at my table?

I was offended but told the waitress I would still tip my customary 25%. Should I have tipped way less due to the hostess?

I would not have tipped at all. You have to earn your tip. I learned that from being a waiter myself at one time.

To the other guy who said not to tip, it wasn't the waitress's fault it was the hostess.
If the service was good aside from that instance then I think you did the right thing.

I'm not really sure why some of these posts say the waitress should get not tip for that. The hostess was the one that was rude, not the waitress. And even if you told the waitress, and the waitress told the manager...theres no promise saying anything would happen, other then the hostess being spoken to.

I'm hoping most of these posts just dont realize that theres a difference between a host and a waitress, and wouldnt really take it out on the server.

We dont tip out the hostess where I work because she or he gets paid a higher hourly wage then we do. Had you deducted the servers tip because of the hostess, then the waitress would be cheated out of money, and the hostess would still get her same hourly rate.

You should have tipped 10%
that would be fair.

Wow, I guess people don't know how to read. Why would you penalize the WAITRESS for a HOSTESS attitude. You did the right thing, but should have spoke to the manager.

Thanks for tipping well.

first off if you tip 25% this is very generous. secondly you should have asked your waitress to go and get the manager. when the manager came to your table you should have asked the hostess to repeat her comment to the manager. tipping the waitress was correct. allowing the hostess off the hook incorrect. seeing the hostess fired priceless

So was this the hostess at the front door, but not the waitress? If the waitress was still very courteous and polite, then there would be no need to dock her tip because of someone else's rudeness. If it was the waitress herself, then I wouldn't have tipped at all. Either way, I would have asked to speak to a manager.

You rewarded her for poor service..a real slap to those waiters and waitresses who give great service and are sometimes stiffed at the table! Not only would I not have tipped her, but I would have explained to the manager on duty just why I didn't. Their restaurant doesn't need this type of person on their staff.

You TOTALLY should have complained to the manager. And write a letter to the president of Darden Restaurants.

Was she being rude or just joking, if she was rude I would have made a comment to the manager.
